Every person has a choice between ascending spiritually and morally in thought, speech or action, or descending. The stairs on the right lead up to the light of self-fulfillment while those on the left lead down to darkness and despair. The natural choice of those who are guided by the Torah is to strive for self-improvement and elevation. The central figure is situated as in the narrow passage of an hour glass. The earthy swirls beneath his feet allude to the past while the future is suggested in the upper part of the hour glass. Within the outline of the Tablets of Law, the cascading waterfall symbolizes the life-giving waters of Torah
(mayim chayim). A flame, representing the soul, surges up and forms the fulcrum on which rest the scales of judgment.
